He grew up surrounded by alfalfa and wheat fields in rural Montana, spending his childhood looking for bugs, reading books and bird hunting. He worked variously as a wildland firefighter and bookseller before becoming a part of the inaugural class of Washington State University Murrow News Fellows, where he is embedded with the Yakima Herald-Republic and El Sol de Yakima in Yakima, Washington.
In this position, his stories frequently center on water management and drought, agriculture, immigration, elections, local government and feature profiles.
